Finally it seems like some common sense has dawned on the mobile phone manufacturers. European Commission just announced that the telephone companies have agreed to back a standard charger in Europe. Bravo European Commission!!
Back in Aug 2007 I had written an open letter on what I thought about this craziness that seem to define this industry. In the guise of creating new and more advanced cellular phones, these companies and manufacturers were throwing so much money down the drain by giving out new chargers with each telephone. With razor thin margins and hyper competitive environments they operate in the least device manufacturers could help their own cause, and more importantly the environment’s, is to stick with a standard charger interface and let the consumer keep their existing chargers. Chargers as I see it have a longer lifespan than a cellphone.
It can be forgiven if different manufacturers have different chargers for whatever constraints they have (I cannot think of many) the same manufacturer needing different chargers across two models seems outrageously stupid.
Learn from Blackberry and Apple. They seem to have got it right when it comes to charging the phone.
Now it is turn of FTC in US to step up and do what it should have done years ago and mandate the same requirement of the cellphone manufacturers in keeping with President Obama’s Green initiatives.
FTC should go ahead and put a deadline for manufacturers to standardize chargers and also require them to create a joint recycling program whereby a consumer should be able to drop a old unused charger in any of their shops/recycling centers.
